The Evolution of Tyson Ritter

As mentioned in a post a couple of days ago, it's almost my civic duty as an Oklahoman to demonstrate sufficient affection for the All-American Rejects, so I feel no shame in showing them some love yet again...

OK, so I'll admit that I preferred frontman Tyson Ritter back in his significantly less "eccentric" days... the days of Converse and graphic tees... but there's still something irrestible about his new "Glitter Ritter" persona. (And yes, I'll also admit that it might be due, at least in part, to the fact that the name "Glitter Ritter" is just so darn catchy ;)

Whatever it is, there will always be a soft spot in my heart for Tyson...

Summer Concert Bliss

It's that time of year when our favorite artists start joining forces for woefully limited yet undeniably amazing joint concerts. In perusing the web, here are just of few of said pairings that I've come across thus far...

Kris Allen + Green River Ordinance = pretty darn cool...

Tim McGraw + Lady Antebellum = even cooler...

Keith Urban + The Eagles = ridiculously awesome (sure, the Dixie Chicks are thrown into the mix too, but I could honestly care less about them...)

and last, but certainly not least...

John Mayer + Train doing a limited run of concerts in the Southeast = EPIC. Pure Bliss. Best. Thing. EVER!

Of course, the reality of if I'll actually be able to make it to any of these concerts is a different matter, but hey, a girl can dream can't she?

Disney Gets the Thomas Kinkade Treatment

This past Easter, I was delighted to find a copy of the newest animated Disney hit The Princess and the Frog nestled among the other treats awaiting me in my Easter Basket.

Given that the male population in our household had yet to see the movie, I was quick to unwrap it and pop the disc in the player, insistent on rectifying that glaring gap in their Disney viewing history.

As we skipped through the plethora of ads preceding the film, I sifted through the other plethora of ads awaiting me inside the DVD case. Per usual, most of them were useless coupons for some of the lesser-known straight-to-DVD mediocrity that Disney releases between the big Summer and Holiday movie seasons... but one thing did manage to catch my eye...

Thomas Kinkade had done a print based on the end scene from the Princess and the Frog, and believe it or not, it was actually quite stunning. Certainly not worth the hefty Disney/Kinkade price tag ($300+?! I'm more that content to settle for simple using a jpeg of the image as my desktop background, thank you very much...) But, there's no denying the fact that the image is quite lovely, and certainly worth a mention here...

AAR Get the Glee Treatment

So the moment finally arrived, and Glee made its triumphant return to television this evening. The hour of blissful musical goodness didn't disappoint, and the whole episode could probably warrant being called the Best. Thing. EVER. But... there was one aspect of the show which definitely stood out above anything else.

As a good Oklahoma girl, I pretty much feel it's my duty to worship the Stillwater-bred All-American Rejects (and have done so since they first started making waves with "Swing Swing" over 8 years ago...)

So... needless to say I was giddy with excitement when Lea Michelle and the rest of the Glee crew started belting out "Gives You Hell" during tonight's episode.

It probably also goes without saying that I immediately made my way to iTunes to add this newest single to the bevvy of other Glee tunes gracing my iPod. Hopefully this just bodes well for great things to come for the rest of this season...

Less is More: Especially When it Comes to Twilight

This little gem was brought to my attention when I tried to coerce a friend into watching my brand spanking new copy of the New Moon the other day. Her response was that we could save a lot of time and agony, and enjoy the condensed version.

The condensed version?? you may ask. That's right! It's called New Moon in 15 Minutes, and it's pretty darn hilarious. You can read the complete, illustrated!, version here. Odds are, you can probably even finish it in under 15 minutes... ;)

The Vikings Invade Wal-Mart!

Saw this large Keebler promotional display for "How to Train Your Dragon" during a late-night shopping spree at Wal-Mart the other night.

"What does Keebler have to do with dragons??" you might ask... Honestly, your guess is as good as mine... but then again, when did large-scale movie promo tie-ins EVER make much sense?

Still, definitely an impressive sight that livened up my errand-running.

Gleek-ing Out Over the Newest Rolling Stone

Was absolutely giddy when I came across this new "Glee" Issue of Rolling Stone in an airport gift shop! Of course I immediately had to snag a copy,

Ok, so the article itself was a little strange, to say the least, but the photos are absolutely fantastic. (Described by the photographer as an amalgam of Norman Rockwell and a 1940's pinup poster... what a combination!)

So excited for the return of Glee... three days and counting!!

I know what you are...

...downright creepy looking, that's what.

Spotted these guys while browsing in Borders over Easter weekend, and am honestly shocked to see they're already on clearance.

I mean, who WOULDN'T want a semi-nude Twilight action figure ?? ;-)

LOL'ed a little bit when I noticed how Jacob's already 50% off, while Edward's apparently still worth more and only marked down 30%. Chalk that one up as a another victory for Team Edward, I guess.

(And no, I didn't ened up buying one of these figures, despite the sale prices. Thank goodness!)

Kowabunga!

Mad props to someone on campus for maintaining a sense of whimsy and lightheartedness amidst the end-of-semester insanity.

Who knew the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had relocated to Williamsburg??

I guess Chanello's can expect a significant increase in pizza orders with the "turtles" in town :-)

Not Your Average Easter Egg...

My brother and I had something pretty spectacular awaiting us in our Easter Baskets this year. Sure there were the typical chocolate eggs, and plastic candy-filled eggs... but the best eggs of all were the magical How to Train Your Dragon Hatching "Dragon Eggs!!"

After unwrapping the eggs from endless layers of plastic, you drop it in a bowl of warm water and it starts to hiss and fizz just like Alka-Seltzer.
Moments later, your brand-new, "mystery dragon" is revealed.

Neither of our dragons ended up being as ridiculously adorable as "Toothless" in the movie- but they're still pretty nifty, especially since you can mix and match parts until you get a sort of "Franken-dragon" creation.

My new little red dragon is currently remains nameless. Any suggestions?

Matthew Morrison with a Ukulele? Enough Said.

So the Glee Cast performed at the Annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House yesterday, and man, oh, man do I wish I could've been there!

Oh well- guess I'll just have to settle for the Youtube version, which includes fan favorite "Somebody to Love," as well as Mark Salling (Puck) doing "Sweet Caroline," and Matthew Morrison playing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" on a ukulele!!

Best.Thing. EVER! And proof that the upcoming live tour is going to be ridiculously awesome... especially if they make sure all the mics work!

Honoring a Legend

So pretty much everything that Turner Classic Movies does could qualify as the Best. Thing EVER! But they are currently doing something that really caught my eye!

This month, TCM is paying tribute to a Hollywood legend by hosting a special George Stevens Spotlight.

Every Monday in April they will screen a classic Stevens film including a couple of my personal favorites: Giant (James Dean as a cowboy!) and A Place in the Sun (Montgomery Clift being Montgomery Clift... aka just plain adorable) The full schedule can be seen on their website.

Sounds delightful-- now if only our dorm room cable service included TCM... Oh well, guess I'll just have to have my own personal screening of Giant in honor of the occasion. Can't say no to James Dean in a cowboy hat!

An Easter Tradition...

The Cadbury Clucking Bunny has always been an iconic element of Easter-time in my mind. In fact, to this day, one of the coolest Easter basket goodies I ever received was a plush version of this little guy, complete with custom "clucking" noises!

The bunny was sadly absent from t.v. this Easter season (or maybe I just wasn't watching enough t.v. to see him, not sure which...) he it seemed like he definitely deserved a shout-out.

Were you missing the bunny this year as well? If so, you can relive some of his classic ads from her past courtesy of Youtube by clicking here!

The Nicholas Sparks Formula

Saw The Last Song this weekend. It was cute, predictable, and basically everything you might expect from a Nicholas Sparks tale. Nothing particularly exciting- definitely not worthy of "Best. Thing. EVER!" status.

What does deserve a shout-out is the "10 Life Lessons Learned from Nicholas Sparks Movies" list which was published by Moviefone this past weekend. The list definitely hits the nail on the head, poking fun at some of the more repetitive aspects of his cinematic romances.

Items on the list include:
1) Falling in love only happens at the beach
2) Real men have seaside hobbies
3) It takes a village for love to work
4) Writing letters trumps texting
5) Kisses make women docile
6) Resort-town locals mean trouble
7) Parents know best (especially dads)
8) Distance makes the heart grow fonder
9) Nature and the arts are aphrodisiacs
10) The people we love tend to die

The list goes on to cite specific example from each Sparks film adaptation- including The Last Song. The commentary is pretty funny, and can be viewed HERE.

Kanye would be so proud...

"Yo... other colleges out there. I'm really happy for you, and I'ma let you finish. But William & Mary had the best acceptance packet of all time. OF ALL TIME."

That's right- my little bro just got his William & Mary acceptance packet, and I must say that it's gotten a lot snazzier from when I got mine a few years back.

Rather than some anecdote from one of our fathers, it's got a Jon Stewart quote plastered on the inside cover. Along with all the basic info about registration, fees, housing, etc - it's also got a nifty little tab titled "You're Cool" complete with a pair of Kanye-esque shutter shades.

Props to the WM Admissions Office for avoiding excessive TWAMPy-ness when attempting to lure prospective students here. They grow accustomed to the "eccentricities" of the WM student body soon enough- but for now they can envision a campus full of shutter shade-clad Kanye Clones waiting to welcome them with open arms ;-)

Oh how I wish this was an April Fool's joke...

So... a few years back, when I was all engrossed in the fervor of the new Phantom of the Opera movie, I ended up reading a ridiculous spin-off novel called The Phantom of Manhattan... **Spoiler Alert**

The basic plot was that Christine was lured to New York to give a series of Coney Island, only to learn that the entire scheme was orchestrated by none other than the Phantom, who'd apparently given up on Paris and decided to go nurse his broken heart in the USA. Along the way, Christine learns that her husband Raoul is impotent, and their now-adolescent son was actually fathered by the Phantom.

Sound ridiculous? Well I thought so- but apparently Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't.

Fast forward to 2010, and I'm on an airplane reading a Delta in-flight magazine that mentions an upcoming sequel to the Phantom of the Opera which is actually based upon the absurd Phantom of Manhattan plotline?! I can't believe it. I'm convinced that it has to be a joke, but a little "Googling" proves me wrong.

Love Never Dies, the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera has indeed hit the London stage, and is due to arrive in New York City in the near future. Who knows? Maybe the show will defy all expectations and be a smash hit as beautiful and spellbinding as its predecessor. Maybe it will turn out to be the Best. Thing. EVER. (I doubt it!) But for now- it sure is cause for a good laugh if nothing else.

So much better than a ticket stub :-)

Ok, I admit it. I'm kind of a concert t-shirt addict.

Sure, by the time you're at the show you've already shelled out plenty for the ticket itself- and the shirts are undeniably overpriced-- but there's nothing like the thrill of getting to a concert and pushing your way through the throng to see what treasures the merch. booth has to offer.

There's usually a variety of snazzy/clever/catchy shirts to choose from (bonus points if they actually have the tour dates on the back, making it even more of an epic souvenir!) I usually only ever intend to buy a shirt from the headliner- but sometimes the opening act's shirt is just too awesome to pass up, and I end up with a double-header.

You just can't beat the joys of the "morning after" when you get to don your concert tee with pride. It always serves as a great conversation piece. "Oh, did you go to the show?" someone will ask you. Suddenly you've been given the perfect opportunity to reminisce just a bit- reliving your favorite moments from the performance.

Yes- I'm a concert shirt addict. I have a closet full of "souvenirs," and I wouldn't have it any other way :-)

"My Life Would Suck Without...GLEE :-) "

What could be better than the upcoming return of "Glee" to television, you might ask.

Well- there are few things that fit the bill, but the chance to see all of the beloved "Glee" stars live on-stage, belting out fan favorites from the show just might do the trick.

That's right- the "Glee LIVE" tour will be hitting the road soon, and it promises to be one of the most anticipated live music events of the summer.

The tour is tragically short- hitting only four cities- but I will definitely be doing my best to catch one of the shows. The chance to "Gleek" out to my favorite singing pseudo-high schoolers live on-stage is just too good to pass up...

Life's Short- Eat Dessert First (Or at Least ORDER it First!)

This one's so simple- yet so brilliant!

A friend and I were looking for a quick dinner spot before the recent Third Eye Blind show (see yesterday's Best. Thing. EVER!) when we stumbled upon Max & Erma's burger joint.

It looked tasty, affordable, and didn't have an enormous line out the door-- so we knew we'd found just the spot for a pre-concert bite. Little did we know what kinds of joys awaited us just inside :-)

As we perused the dessert section of the menu, something immediately caught our eye. "FRESH, HOT COOKIES" it said. And they mean "fresh!" All you have to do is make your desire for cookies known when ordering your entree, and they go put your batch of cookies in the oven to bake while you enjoy your main course. (It's a great ploy to make sure they get you to commit to a dessert order early on before you have a chance to decide that you are "too full" on your entree) ...Then, like magic, a cookie sheet full of piping-hot, ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies was brought straight to our table at the end of our meal. Amazing.

"I want something else, to get me through this, semi-charmed kind of life"

The other night I got the chance to see Third Eye Blind in concert at the Norva in Nofolk, VA- and I absolutely loved every minute of it.

While rocking out to old "classics" such as "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper," I realized that there's really nothing like getting to relish in the awesomeness of bands that are a blast from your Middle School past.

In fact, I hadn't had quite that much fun at a live show since I saw Mark Hoppus and the other thirty-something man-children of Blink-182 take the stage last September.

Oh- and while on the subject of Third Eye Blind- here's one extra little tidbit of awesomeness. In the otherwise lackluster movie The Yes Man, Jimmy Carrey uses the song "Jumper" to coax a suicidal man off oh his rooftop. It's a delightful patch of randomness, and it's definitely worth a look!

Best. Souvenir. EVER!

So my family made a recent pilgrimage of sorts to the little town of Mount Airy, NC... fondly known as "Mayberry" because of its claim to fame as actor Andy Griffith's hometown.

I was bummed to miss out on experiencing this little gem of pop culture... but thanks to the souvenir they sent me, I can still have a little taste of Mayberry right here in the comfort of my dorm room!

I am now the proud owner of "Mayberry's Finest Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough Muffin Mix," and I can't wait to whip it up and see how it tastes... I'm sure it will be just as delicious as if Aunt Bee had made them herself :-)

An Early Taste of the Summer Movie Hype :-)

With the release of How to Train Your Dragon this weekend, it was like a sneak peek at the forthcoming excitement of summer movie season.

Sure, it's basically three months of excessive hype and omnipresent marketing gimmicks... but I'm a sucker for all of it.

But seriously, in the case of this movie, what's not to love??

You've got a kindly reptilian sidekick that's so bizarre-looking that it's absolutely adorable, a fun, Celtic-style score (with a little Sigur Ros thrown in), the vocal stylings of sexy Scotsman Gerard Butler, and a full-fledged McDonalds Happy Meal tie-in complete with containers that can be transformed into horned viking hats!! What's not to love?

Netflix Knows Me All Too Well...

So today I logged into Netflix, and the welcome page greeted me. As usual, a plethora of film suggestions appeared based on what Netflix claim to be my demonstrated movie taste.

Normally these suggestions range from treacly family fare to straight-to-video action b-movies... a bizarre assortment which never ceases to baffle me, and pretty much never results in me hitting the "add to queue" button.

But- today- Netflix finally got it right! Apparently the "system" has finally made sense of my eclectic film tastes-- because the suggested sub-genre of films which it recommended to me was entitled "Romantic Movie Starring James Stewart." It pretty much doesn't get more spot-on than that where my cinematic interests are concerned...

Thankfully I got a screencap to preserve the moment while it lasted-- by the next day the homepage had reverted back to its old ways, recommending Vin Diesel flicks and and obscure educational videos... but it was nice while it lasted!

Aussies in Unexpected Places

So I head into my Organizational Behavior class on Monday morning and our professor informs us that we're going to spend the class period watching a video case on leadership techniques.

I immediately fear the worst, envisioning one of those 70s-era training videos featuring grating music, out-of-date hairdos, and painfully heavy-handed dialogue. It seemed we were in for a long hour and 2o minutes.

Imagine my surprise when our prof cues up an A&E biopic/mini-series featuring Kenneth Branagh as explorer Ernest Shackleton. This thing's got some totally legit production values, a sweeping score, and not a bad 70s hairdo in sight!

Better yet- the film featured Aussie actor Matt Day in the role of photographer Frank Hurley. This guy is easy on the eyes, and definitely easy on the ears as well, with his dreamy Aussie brogue.

Yep, nothing like Aussies in Unexpected Places to liven up ANY early morning business class :-)

A Trip Down Memory Lane Courtesy of Facebook...

Facebook's done it again. They've roped us in with a completely useless yet thoroughly amusing application which supposedly allows you a "window into your soul" based on your prior Facebook activity.

Well... the "window into your soul" part might be a bit extreme, but it's undeniable amusing to see the "Ghosts of Facebook Statuses Past" reveal themselves before your eyes.

Lest you think I'm a total creeper, I need to clarify that the excessive mentioning of Anthony Rapp's name is mainly due to a countdown I conducted the three weeks prior to his speaking engagement which I was promoting on campus last year...

And just to clarify, for those who have accused me of using the phrase "Rocks My Socks" far too often in my Facebook statuses, none of those words appear in this "Top 20 List." So there.

Oh- and did I mention that useless yet addictive Facebook applications rock my socks? :-p

"Forks, Washington is the Town that I Detest..."

In honor of the recent DVD release of New Moon- here's a little bit of good, old-fashioned Twilight-lampooning... Twilight: The Musical.

Ok- so this may sound like an excruciating viewing experience (and at times it is!) but its definitely still worth a look. The singers are only so-so, and there is a mysterious "Bella switch" mid-way through the series, but I have to give this viral vid phenomenon props for its clever lyrics which point out the more absurd/awkward/absolutely ridiculous moments which we were all scratching our heads about in the the first Twilight film. (e.g. Bella's strange potted cactus companion from the beginning of the movie.)

Haven't had enough after part 1? Fear not, the intrepid folks at Gliff Productions have made three of these puppies so far, and there may still be more on the way...

Tik Tok

So, the random notes that my dear little brother tends to leave for me on various dry erase surfaces never fail to brighten my day (even if they do frequently contain genitalia!)... and this one is no exception.

Imagine my surprise when I came back to my room, glanced at my calendar, and discovered I had some pretty interesting plans in store for Friday.

Ke$ha would be so proud. Thanks little bro', for always keeping me on my toes!

The Sounds of Sherlock

Ok- so if I'm finally moving away from all the "Irish" kitschy-ness (at least for the time being!), then what could the Best. Thing. EVER! for today possibly be?

Why- that's "elementary" my dear blog reader :-) After seeing Sherlock Holmes for the second time recently, it was all the more apparent why Hans Zimmer's rollicking score was total robbed in terms of the Oscars.

I'm not normally the type to "jam" to motion picture scores on my iPod on regular basis- but I am proud to say that the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack was one of the first things purchased with my bountiful supply of iTunes giftcards from Christmastime.

The score, according to director Guy Ritchie, was meant to be a mixture of "The Pogues joining a Romanian Orchestra." Hans Zimmer achieved this ecclectic meld of sounds by using things like a banjo, "squeaky" violins, and even a broken pub piano which was specially abused just for the purposes of the film.

The only thing that could have made this soundtrack better is if the film's rousing version of "The Rocky Road to Dublin" had been included on the CD as well...

Yet Another "Taste of the Emerald Isle"

Okay, okay. I know St. Patrick's Day has come and gone, and I will soon be moving on from the incessant references to all things "Irish..." but not before I pay homage to this little bit of awesomeness which I stumbled across in Trader Joe's the other day.

Trader Joe's Blarney Scone!
Check out the little ditty on the wrapper: "There once was an Irish Soda Bread, that we named by a scone instead. Kissed with sweet raisins, we think it's amazin', and we hope the good word you will spread."

Thrown in a little bit of Kerry Gold imported Irish butter (also in stock at Trader Joe's in honor of St. Pat's) and you've got something that's pretty "amazin' " indeed!

A Discovery of Epic Proportions

It was St. Patrick's Day. We were well-stocked on Guinness, Smithwick's, Green Cupcakes, and Lucky Charms Cereal. A DVD copy of Darby O'Gill and the Little People sat at the ready for our viewing pleasure. Things couldn't get any better... or so we thought.

Suddenly a friend of ours arrives and informs us how easy it was for her to remember our room number because it's the
"St. Patrick's Day Room."

"Sure, we've got a bunch of glittery shamrocks on the door, it's pretty hard to miss, but what's that got to do with the room number?" we ask.

Then it hits us. We're room 317. As in 3-17. As in the date of St. Patrick's Day! Clearly it's fate. :-)

I Lost My Heart to a Galway Girl...

... or at least to Gerard Butler singing about one...

Yep, that's right-- in honor of St. Patrick's Day, I'm going to give a shout-out to a pseudo-Irishman singing a pseudo-Irish song in a pseudo-Irish movie.

Sound a bit absurd? Maybe. But who can resist Gerard Butler's rousing rendition of "Galway Girl" in the 2007 film P.S. I Love You.

Don't want to sit through the entire somewhat melancholy movie just to see this one little gem? Fear not- you can view it here!

And... given that there are at least a dozen versions of this song on my iPod, it seems only fair to pay respect to the other musical greats who have tackled the song over the years. Check out a few other memorable renditions...

Steve Earle, "The Original"

The Town Pants, The "Up-Tempo" Version

Mundy with Sharon Shannon, "The Duet"

Cailín na Gaillimhe, "The Irish Version"

"OMG- RPattz is Flawed?!"

Adolescent Twilight fans worldwide were probably counting down the days until Rob Pattinson's newest flick Remember Me came out last Friday... Was the film anything spectacular, or even particularly memorable. No, not so much.

Like his character, Tyler Hawkins, the film had plenty of imperfections and weaknesses, but what the film did finally do was present Rob Pattinson in a role where his character had at least a few more intricacies than perfect-gentleman Edward Cullen, or the earlier model of "ideal boyfriend RPattz-" Cedric Diggory.

Tyler rants, rages, fumes, and curses. At times it's over the top, but it can be momentarily endearing as well. And sure, he has his female interest in the film, but this is hardly an Edward and Bella-esque mushfest the entire time. In fact, the #1 lady in his life is his middle-school aged younger sister, whom he dotes upon and protects with fierce fraternal loyalty which can be downright adorable at times.

OK- so even I can admit to the seeming absurdity of the hyperbole on this one. Was the movie, or even Rob Pattinson's performance, really the "Best. Thing. EVER?" No-- of course not. But it did make for an entertaining night out at the movies-- and could definitely fit the "daily dose of happy" criteria. It was nice to see RPattz Dropping the Cullen Routine-- at least for the time being. "Edward" will definitely be back with a vengeance come June with the release of Eclipse. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see how long the 'Twi-Hards" can manage to keep this one afloat at the box office-- especially with the barrage of news stories weighing in on the film's "surprise" ending. Who knew the film would end up getting even this much attention?

Serials, and Star Trek, and Sherlock-- Oh My!

A visit to a beautiful, historic university library is always a good thing... but it gets even better with a little bit of "pop-culture goodness" thrown in.

This Spring, the University of North Carolina Wilson Library Rare Book Collection is hosting a wicked-cool exhibit called "American Pop Culture in Print."

The display features a little bit of everything-- vintage Sherlock Holmes novels and spin-off comic books, Star Trek posters, cowboy dime novels, WWII-era advertisements, and much, much more!

A highlight was seeing the case filled with editions of canonical classic literature where the covers were adjusted to sell the works as pulp fiction and dime novels. A particular favorite was the copy of Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms which could pass as a steamy romance novel, featuring Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley on the cover in a passionate embrace, gazing at one another lustfully.

Sadly there was no photography allowed in the exhibit. (I would have loved to snap a few photos to preserve the awesome-ness of some of the gems on display... items like the vintage "Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Star Trek" poster, for starters...)

The best thing about this exhibit was its overall intent-- to promote the message that popular culture, no matter how seemingly "low-brow," is still well worth studying because of the insights it reveals into the workings of society.

That's all for now. Live long and prosper. ;-)

Luck o' the Irish... and a Perfect Midnight Snack

And now... continuing with the theme of "festive foods..."

We had just arrived back in Williamsburg after Spring Break, and a late-night Wawa run was definitely in order.

We perused the usual offerings-- candy, fountain drinks, hoagies and other such delights that are only a few clicks of a touch screen away...

Then we saw them, resting in the pastry case, relatively inconspicuous... the Wawa Limited Edition Green Shamrock Donut!!

Not only did these jolly little treats bring a smile to our faces- they sure were tasty too! The perfect midnight snack to bring "luck o' the Irish" for the second half of the semester... :-)

A Taste of the Emerald Isle...

Guinness Chocolate Gelato -- found this delectable treat at Sugarland Bakery on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It was a scrumptious taste of Ireland!

The rest of Sugarland was pretty amazing as well- lots of delicious pastries, and incredible custom-made cake creations on display.

Used Books on the Fly...

Our plane's just arrived at the Raleigh-Durham airport. Walking through the terminal, we see the typical array of airport commerce. Watered-down versions of popular chain restaurants, cheesy souvenir shops and numerous coffee stands. Then- as we were about to head towards the baggage claim- I spotted it.

It was called 2nd Ed. Book Sellers, and basically it was a used bookstore smack dab in the middle of the bustling airport.

While it lacked many of the charms of your typical hole-in-the-wall used bookshop, you have to give it credit for trying. In the airport environment where one is normally hard-pressed to find anything beyond the few mainstream titles currently topping a best-seller list, it was a nice change of pace to experience a shop which actually allowed for some legitimate browsing.

Kudos to 2nd Edition Book Sellers, for providing a source for unique used books "on the fly!"

"I'm so obsessed... my heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest"

Ok... so I'm not exactly rockin' much of an "untrimmed chest" (thank goodness!), but there's no denying the fact that I'm completely obsessed with the newest hit from Train.

"Hey Soul Sister" - it's fun, it's catchy, it's bound to spark a comeback for the ukulele. Oh, and it made the incessant commercials during the Oscars slightly more bearable. (The new Samsung ad featuring the song debuted that night- and proceeded to play at least a dozen more times during the 3 hour broadcast.)

The music video is just as delightful as the song itself, too! The video is mysteriously absent from YouTube, but you can check it out here on the VH1 website.

"Show of handsome..."

For those of you who have the stamina to keep the t.v. on after the lengthy Oscar broadcast finally ends, you've probably had the treat of experiencing Jimmy Kimmel's riotous post-Oscar specials.

First, he brought us the joys of the "I'm F***ing Ben Affleck" video (a response to then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman's "I'm F***ing Matt Damon" video.)

This pair of videos may have seemed hard to top, but Kimmel managed to do it by bringing back Ben, Matt, and a bevy of other celebrity male hearththrobs to form the "Handsome Men's Club." As if the show wasn't fantastic enough already after he let us get a second glimpse of Robert Downey Junior rockin' his awesome bowtie (see the Best. Thing. EVER. from March 7).

If you have yet to experience the Handsome Men's Club, you can check it out here. Hope Kimmel's already planning for next year- 'cause this one's gonna be hard to beat. (Unless he finally caves and allows Taylor Lautner and "Robert Patteenson" to join the club!! ;-)

Michael the Mountie

I know, I know. You might be thinking that the Olympics are old news by this point. But there is at least one portion of the closing ceremonies which is worth immortalizing.

It's nearing the end of the show. NBC has just returned from a commercial break. A familiar, silky smooth voice starts radiating from my TV, singing the tune "Maple Leaf Forever". I've heard that crooning before. But no! It can't be... can it??

It IS! It's Michael Buble all decked out as a Canadian Mountie!

The Mountie getup was quickly ripped from his back by a couple of flirtatious dancers, only to reveal a much more Buble-esque white suit... but the image of "Michael the Mountie" will forever be imprinted in my mind.

Props to the producers of the show, who looked beyond the oft-touted Canadian "rockers" like Avril Lavigne and Nickelback and thought to include Buble in the show. It definitely made for a night to remember.

As Delightful as a Bouquet of Newly Sharpened Pencils...

Today's dose of happy... Tom Hanks as Joe Fox in the 1998 rom-com "You've Got Mail." That's Joe FOX. F--O--X.

What's not to love about a man who waxes poetic about the joys of New York in the Fall. A man who's willing to give Pride and Prejudice a chance, philosophizes about Starbucks' role in reforming the "indecisives" of the world, and can charm disgruntled grocery store cashiers with a single knock-knock joke.

"Mr. 152 insights into my soul" Meg Ryan calls him- which is pretty much true for hopeless romantics everywhere. With his trusty golden retriever Brinkley by his side, Joe Fox is frankly hard to beat.

If this post has left you boggled, clearly you need to go find a copy of "You've Got Mail" and watch it. Now. Right now. Your life will be a little bit happier because of it- trust me.

And no- of course I didn't indulge in his delightful-ness twice in one evening simply because the Oxygen Network decided to air it twice in a row. Nope. No way.

Ok... you got me. Make that a double "daily dose of happy" for today. Can't argue with that...

Oh- and brownie points to Tom Hanks himself- who is apparently just as wonderful as his on-screen alter-ego... just take a look at his real-life crusade to save a local indie bookshop. How cute is that?

And the Oscar Goes To...

Robert Downey Jr's Bowtie!!

Few men could pull this off- but RDJ does it, and he does it so well...

In fact, props to him for being one of the most charming and wonderfully eclectic features of Awards Season- starting with his fantastic Golden Globes acceptance speech for his Best Actor win for "Sherlock Holmes," leading all the way up to his post-Oscars appearance on Jimmy Kimmel.

Oh yeah- and the "Iron Man 2" trailer which he debuted on Kimmel's show ain't too shabby either. Is May 7th starting to look like an upcoming Best. Thing. EVER? I'm thinking so...

Cupcakes

Sprinkles Cupcakes is gearing up for the Oscars with their snazzy "Red Carpet Cupcakes" (a whimsical variation of their popular Red Velvet variety of cupcake.)

These cupcakes are decked out with a shiny gold star- and their box comes sealed with a special walk of fame star sticker in place of the traditional brown one. Available for three days only, according to the Sprinkles cupcake calendar.

A clever marketing ploy? Of course. But you've gotta love anyone who puts the Oscars on their calendar as a holiday worth celebrating right up there with Easter, St. Patrick's Day, and Christmas :-) And they sure are tasty, no matter the occasion.

HAPPY OSCARS WEEKEND, EVERYONE!

A Daily Dose of Happy...

So- for quite some time my family and friends have teased me about my affinity for hyperbole. On a weekly, if not daily basis, they would call me out for enthusiastically dubbing something as the "Best. Thing. EVER." A bit over the top? Perhaps. But why not?

My goal with this blog is to embrace the enthusiasm... compile all these "Best. Things. EVER" into a stockpile of 365 daily doses of "happy."

Hopefully what you find here will make you smile, chuckle- or at least make you scratch your head if nothing else.

So- coming up first... the most recent "Best. Thing. EVER." which inspired the launch of this blog: The Turner Classic Movies Robert Osborne Bobblehead Doll.

What makes this the Best. Thing. EVER you ask? The mere existence of this Bobblehead, and the thought that there are enough classic cinephiles in the world who know who Robert Osborne is, for starters. The sheer randomness of it, for seconds.

Have I purchased a Robert Osborne bobblehead of my very own? Not yet- but I'm thinking it's only a matter of time. I'd be proud to have this guy adorning my desk- and I'd be proud to be in the company of anyone who could recognize him!

You can find this snazzy little guy- and other TCM items - here, at the Official Turner Classic Movies shop.
